Following the visit of Aga Khan in 1960 to Hunza, a direct relationship between the Ismailis of Gilgit-Baltistan and their Imamati Institutions has developed and a wide range of development institution has been established ranging from Health, Education, Economic Development, Rural Development, Socio-religious enlightenment and many others through the direct funding of the Aga Khan and his family. With the passage of time, based on learning and best practices these institutions have been modernized and expanded and a robust development activity initiated by the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) in 1980s with the scope of development initiatives reaching out to all the population residing in Gilgit-Baltistan, without any discrimination of faith, religion, region or ethnicity.

The visit to the Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan in 1960 was not a feast of joy, to travel on a road that was rudimentary in nature and at many places on the road the jeep needs to be pushed and pulled to safely keep it on the track. The travel by Aga Khan IV to this region in those circumstances shows his deepest attachment, commitment, interest and love for his followers and in their development. Here we have put some of the glimpses of that historic visit of His Highness Aga Khan from the available photo bank.
