Gilgit-Baltistan cannot be Made a Province- Ministry of Kashmir Affairs

Islamabad: In a briefing to standing committee of Senate of Pakistan, the ministery of Kashmir Affairs stated that currently Gilgit-Baltistan can not be made a province of Pakistan because of the resolution of the United Nations. If Gilgit-Baltistan will be made a province, it will harm the cause of Kashmir and India will raise severe objections. However, various initiatives are in the process to give more autonomy to the region.

A member of Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly and prominent politicians has stated on the condition of to remain anonymous that, Kashmir has always been presented as an excuse by the federal establishment of Pakistan to keep its brutal control over the resources of Gilgit-Baltistan. When Pakistan and India both have completely disregarded the resolutions on Kashmir issues in all other matter why they are so resilient to attach the declaration of Gilgit-Baltistan as a province of Pakistan?

The people of Gilgit-Baltistan has been raising the issue on several national and international forums over the violations of basic human rights of the people in the light UN declarations and resolutions but the Islamabad is deaf to them. Islamabad should also be mindful of provision of rights given to a region which is being considered disputed between two or more  countries.
