Violence In Gilgit ahead of US Ambassadors’ visit to Gilgit-Baltistan

Ahead of the planned visit of the US ambassador to Pakistan Mr. Cameron Mentor, violence has once more erupted in Gilgi-Baltistan. A few days back a delegation of US diplomats had visited Giglit-Baltistan, where they met with people across various sections of society. The meetings seemed to be much more of a fact finding mission, where various groups of diplomats met with pre-identified individual including nationalists and ministers of the present government in Gilgit-Baltistan.
In the fallout of the recent sectarian violence in Gilgit-Baltistan, the visit of American diplomats and their intense engagement with key stakeholders of the region has raised many eyebrows. In a situation where the relationship between Pakistan and US are its lowest ebb an increasing interest and engagement of US in Gilgit-Baltistan which has never ever been so opens the doors for myriads of speculations.
The recent violence in which people with more peaceful backgrounds have been attacked (One died and the other is injured) seems to be an intentional provocation to destabilize the security situation in Gilgit-Baltistan and send a very strong message to the US camps. The ongoing violence seem to have not an obvious tail end in the going so called ‘great game of competing super powers’ on the land of Gilgit-Baltistan and sufferers will be the poor people of the area. It is all very meaningful to see the mentor to visit Skardu rather than Gilgit which is the capital of Gilgit-Baltistan.
What is the role US will be playing in Gilgit-Baltistan would be interesting as it the gate way for China to reach Gawarder Sea Port, which china has built with a huge investment and has pinned huge hopes as one of the most important route for its ever growing economy and which is not seen favorable by US and West.
