[Report] Protest on the killing of Two IDPs in Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan

Gilgit-Baltistan wide people belonging to all walks of life have condemned the brutal killings of two IDPs of the affectees of Attabad Landslide by the police. The police opened fire indiscriminately over the peaceful IDPs who were protesting to record their grievances and suffering with the visiting Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan to Hunza Valley.

Whereas protests continued all over Pakistan by the people of Gilgit-Blatistan against police terrorism and ineffectiveness of the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan led by the PPP. The strong criticism was observed against Chief Minister Mehdi Shah, as people were chanting slogans “ Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan Murda Bad”

While people of Hunza are highly condemning Wazir Baig and Mutabiat Shah the representatives of the people of Hunza in Giglit-Baltistan for their failure to meet and voice the genuine needs and demands of the people of IDPs of Attabad Disaster. People particularly in Gojal-Hunza to where the both IDPs who are shot dead by police belong had the tremendous support to Wazir Baig and Mutabiat Shah and those were people of the Gojal only who have made these two people to reach Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly otherwise they both were highly rejected by the people in Central and Lower Hunza. Subhan Daresh who belongs to Gojal stated that “I feel that we the people of Gojal-Hunza have made a life time mistake by supporting Wazir Baig and Mutabiat Shah in the elections, however, it is not the mistake of the common people rather our educated youth and leaders have mislead us to gain their personal wishes and interest to be achieved, we condemned them as well” Another person Sakhi stated that “ Our representatives are equally responsible for this brutal killing of the IDPs by the police therefore both Wazir Baing, Mutabiat Shah and Chief Minister Mehdi Shah should resign from the government.”

At the same time MLAs ,Wazir Baig, Muhammad Ali Akhtar, Raziuddin Razive, Didar Ali and Wazir Shakil have admitted that the police have committed a heinous crime by firing at the peaceful IDP protesters. Therefore, a thorough investigation should be made and those police officers who are involved in killing must be brought to the justice. They all show their sympathies with the grived family members of Sherullah Baig and his son who died because of police firing.

Meanwhile the Fedral Minister, Rehman Malik has also condemned the accident and have directed the IGP of Gilgit-Baltistan to present the investigation report which could be presented to President Asif Ali Zardari. DSP Babar and Constable Afzal have been suspended from their jobs and a murder case had been registered against both. But they are not yet under arrest.

The Chief Minister has announced Rs. 300,000 compensation to the family of the one whose loved ones have died and Rs. 50,000 to those who are injured, in addition Governor Gilgit-Baltistan has also announced Rs. 100,000 for those who have died. The compensation amount has been reject as a joke with the grieved family whose breadwinner have died while their sole bread earner have died, who were living in the IDP camps after losing their everything in the Attabad Dame. MAL and supreme leader of nationalist Nawaz Nazi has termed this a fun game of Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan.

The Supreme Appellate Court of Gilgit-Baltistan has taken very serious notice of the incident and has ordered a fair and transparent investigation into the matter and providing justice to the grieved family members.

In various public gathering from Hunza to Karachi people of Hunza have thanked to all people of Gilgit-Baltistan who have shown an unprecedented support to the people of Hunza on this grieved situation in which people of Gilgit-Baltistan have lost their two precious lives. The leadership and community representatives have requested people of Hunza to record their protest peacefully and respect the law of the land.
