HUNZA: The Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani visited Hunza in tight security arrangements to assess the ground situation of the destructions caused by January 4 landslide and the 18 kilometer long lake formed on Hunza River.
While addressing a public gathering in Gulmit, the headquarter of the affected Gojal Tehsil, he said Pakistan Army is standing behind the people of Hunza in this difficult time.
The troops are making efforts to ensure the release of water without any further destruction, he said.
Kayani added that engineers are developing the spillway in a systematic manner in order to avoid sudden outburst of the lake which could devastate downstream areas.
He asserted that the affected people should not expect anything higher than the 25,000 to 50,000 rupees maximum compensation.
Kayani said the government has not yet paid a penny to Pakistan Army and more than Rs80 million has been spent on the excavation work.—DawnNews
