Skardu (Hadi Hussain): The government of Gilgit-Baltistan is unable to provide required funding for the construction of the campus of Karakuram International University in Skardu, Gilgit-Baltistan. On several occasion the representatives of PPP government including the former Governor Qamar Zaman Kaira had announced to provide the required funds for the construction of the campus but in vain.
The Karakorum International University (KIU) had submitted PC-1 with an estimated 600 millions of rupees to Federal Planning and Development Department (P&D) of Pakistan, for the construction of the campus, however on various grounds the project is being put into the back burner by using various delaying tactics. First P&D asked to reduce the budgeted amount 60% so the University submitted a PC-1 with 250 millions. In addition for the temporary arrangement of the faculty, staff and administrative purposes KIU has also submitted PC-1 with an amount of 60 millions only but yet now there is no response by the Federal Planning and Development Department of Pakistan.
It is to be noted that the Mushraf Government has established the University and had provided substantial amount of funds for the development of the University. At the time of Mushraf the university has grown exemplary in a short span of time. However, since the democratic government of PPP has came into the power the University is said to face severe financial and administrative issues even to run the existing campus in Gilgit city, which is being considered very unfortunate with the only institution of higher learning.
