[News] Upper Hunza (Gojal) Declared Calamity Hit Area- Govt. of Pakistan is Stalling the Real Issues

Hunza (Karim Salman Jervof):The Governor Gilgit-Baltistan, Mr. Qamar Zaman Kaira, who is also the Minister for information and broad casting visited the disaster hit area at Attabad, Hunza, which due to a massive land sliding (which is said to be the largest land sliding in the history of Pakistan) has blocked 25000 people of upper Hunza. Along the governor were Chief Minster for Gilgit-Baltistan, Syed Mehdi Shah; Speaker GBLA, Wazir Biag; and General (R) Farooq, Chairman NDMA. They met separately with the affected people of Attabad and Gojal.
Governor declared Upper Hunza (Gojal) as calamity hit area which was one of the long held demand of the people of the area. Governor stated that employment will be provided to unemployed people and needy would be paid from Bait-ul-Mal. The secondary school in Gojal would be upgraded to higher secondary. Fees of students studying in government institutions all across Pakistan would be waved off for two semesters.
Operation Theater would be established and required doctors and paramedical staff would be employed at the government health center. Once a week on regular basis medical camp would be commissioned to cater the needs of the people.
The formers of the area would be provided fertilizers and seeds and all necessary arrangement would be made for the continuous supply of all necessary food items.
Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) has been been given the task of removal of debris of landslide under the technical supervision of NESPAK.
The federal minister said that engineers of the World Bank have also been invited for inspection of the site and expert opinion. He said the work on release of water was being done in the light of world Banks advice.
Governor also stated that there are no chances of breach of lake but if required the Government was fully prepared to deal with any situation
Wazir Baig, Speaker of Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly (GBLA) stated that no one can deny the problems faced by the people of the area. There is an urgent need to speed up the work for the releasing the water from the dam. However he thanked NDMA for their contribution.
During the press conference the Governor is being grille for the non-fulfillment of his last promises, including his initial claim on January when he stated during his visit that the water will be released from the dame with in five day but more than two and half months passed nothings has happened.
Governor is also being tossed over the giving contract to FWO which has no expertise and skills to work in the situation, while Chinese engineer and the offer of Chinese was being rejected while they were having expertise to deal the situation. Regarding possibilities of corruption as through non-confirmed sources stated that a 400 million Rupees contract is been given to FWO and NESPAK, at the cost of the lives and property of people of Hunza-Nagar, Gilgit and rest of Pakistan. Karia has also been but through the mill over absence of a transparent plan and time line for the release of water by the FWO and Government of Pakistan as well as for current unsuitable and in effective work which is being considered as an eye wash.
