Gilgit (Ulfat Ara): Tax could be imposed in Gilgit-Baltistan by the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly (GBLA). Addressing Gilgit Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Syed Mehdi Shah, Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan stated that we should think of generating income in our area and should give up looking towards center (federal government) for support. We expect there would be progress in the area and with it our sources of income would increase. It is a first ever statement by any representative from Gilgit-Baltistan to impose tax in the Gilgit-Baltistan where as in the past it is always discouraged.
Further he stated that his top most priority is to ensure peace in the region. He stressed that if there will be peace the investors and tourist would come to the area otherwise they will be shy of the area. In the whole region of Gilgit-Baltistan there is peace and harmony however only in a range of one and half kilometer area of Gilgit city there is a tense situation. We are working with both (Suni and Shia) school of thoughts and I am quite sure that with the help of members of legislative assembly and Ulma we will maintain peace in the region.
The second thing he emphasized was the attendance of government official in their offices. He stated that he visited NAPWD office where out of 18 officers only 10 were present, and when I visited city police station, which is located in the center of city, was showing a condition of a Stable. This is a very grave situation, we have to work to resolve the issues of our people, both the officers and politicians are local people so if we will not serve our own people than nobody could come and help us. I will do all my best to provide justice to every one, if I feel that there is injustice and I could not help than I would resign immediately.
He further stated that in the month of May we will convey a business conference in Gilgit-Baltistan and business men from all four provinces will participate in it. I mentioned that during my visits I have worked to restore regional offices of all schedule banks including National Bank of Pakistan. Established passport office in Skardu and setup separate desk for women in NADRA offices.
Regarding blockage of KKH in Hunza he stated that due to the blockage of the road if there would be any damage to fruits of the area we would compensate it, in this regard I have directed DC Hunza-Nagar to prepare a report.
