1100 teachers of the schools operating under Social Action Program (SAP) are suffering with their children and family for not been paid salaries on regular basis since 2003.
Previously the Giglit-Baltistan court had taken self action and directed the Directorate of Education Gilgit-Baltistan to pay immediately the due salaries of these 1100 teachers of primary schools, however till now there has not been any payment. Considering this grave situation and hardship of livelihood by the teachers, their children and family the Union of SAP Schools Teachers, has warned to stage a hunger strike till death, in front of the Chief Minister House in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The president of Teachers’ Union stated that every time when we protest for payment of our due and legitimate salaries the directorate of Education comes up with fake promise to appease us. However, now we will not go back to schools and home until the issue of SAP schools teachers is not been resolved permanently by the government.
Sources close to the National Education Foundation (NEF) stated that although in principal the Directorate of Education Gilgit-Baltistan agreed to transfer these schools to NEF, however it is not fulfilling the procedural requirements and Directorate of Education Gilgit-Baltistan is not sincerely willing to transfer the schools to NEF, which is causing delays in payments of salaries to SAP school teachers.
The Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan is asked to pay immediate attention to this grave situation and resolve the issue of teachers. It is not only one problem of teachers salary but more important is how these poor and starved teachers would be able to teach the young children of our nation.
