In consideration of recent killings of 11 people including 3 police men and 12 people injured the government has established Anti Terror Force (ATF) in Gilgit. The killings were results of a small bomb blast and firing which the administration links with the sectarianism. However, interesting was the timing of these incidents as they just timed exactly around the visit of Prime Minister Gilani to the Gilgit-Baltistan. Gilani visted GB first time since he took the oath of Prime Minister of Pakistan and it was also first visit of a Prime Minister of Pakitan to the area in 10 years. During the press conference Prim Minister speculated links of foreign elements with the killing incidents of Gilgit-Baltistan
These incidents happened following recently announced ‘Gilgit-Baltistan empowerment and self-rule ordinance 2009, by Govt. of Pakistan and under which the elections are going to happen for 24 seats out of a total of 33 seats of Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative assembly.
Initially the Anti Terror Force would be comprised of 60 personnel including rangers and police men, however if need be the strength could be enhanced. The ATF has the authority to raid where ever it feels it is necessary to maintain law and order situation.
